About Me
Capt. John Cochrane has been a professional captain for over 30 years and is very experienced in the operation and maintenance of these vessels and their equipment. Specializing in Sportfishing and Motor Yachts of all sizes, John has a particular interest in custom sportfishing boats. His international experience includes sales to Mexico, Central America, Australia and the Caribbean.
Born in Galveston, Texas, John grew up fishing and diving the Gulf of Mexico. He has a degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Science from Texas A&M University. Starting in 1979, he began working aboard sportfishing vessels professionally. His work has taken him on two Atlantic crossings and to many outstanding fishing areas around the world. He has operated vessels ranging all the way up to a 110’ mothership. He was part of the original crew on Jerry Dunaway’s mothership operation, The Madam & The Hooker, traveling to Central and South America, the Caribbean and Africa. More recently, John was captain of the "Billy B", a 46' Merritt, based out of Freeport, Texas. For 17 years he fished exclusively for blue marlin off the Texas and Louisiana Coasts.
In addition to being a professional yacht broker, John continues to fish as captain of the 52' CABO Express "Impulse" based out of Texas. He is also active in billfish research in conjunction with Texas A&M University.
In 2006, John and business partner Bobby Byrd founded the Texas Legends Billfish Tournament (www.txlegends.com), pioneering the concept of a high stakes/video release format. The Legends is now one of the top big money tournaments in Texas.
